Common Loon chick - video - East Coast, NY
Short clip of a few days old Common Loon chick trying to get on its parent’s back - East Coast, USA
This was my first time ever photographing and recording young Common Loons! I discovered them by pure accident. As I’ve mentioned before, back in 2019 I planned to spend 2020 differently. My wife supported that idea and decided to get into paddle boarding😁 Since then we spent the summer weekends looking for places so she can paddle board while I was in my kayak by her side 🚣 After somewhat (don't ask 😝) successful day on the SUP, we stopped by a small lake to rest and reflect. In few minutes, we’ve heard unmistakable call of a loon. Quick glimpse through the binoculars reveled two adults and one chick. Short drive to grab something to eat and there I was, back again in the kayak paddling towards this scene. Thank god for those long summer days🙏 As it was my first encounter with loons on their breeding grounds in New England region, I was keeping my distance, shooting at 1200mm (600mm + 2x). As it turned out, birds weren't bothered by my presence at all and kept getting closer to me. Few times, I had to paddle back to have them all in the frame. Even after taking the 2x teleconverter off 🙈 Many firsts on that day! An evening to remember for sure🤩 Check back again, as I will be sharing more videos and photographs from this encounter soon.
As for paddle boarding, I got hooked too🤩 By the end of the summer, I ended up getting one as well🏄♂️ More on that in the future posts…
