Clapper Rail - New Jersey
Adult Clapper Rail walking along the edge of a marsh:
and a little trivia for you today :)
On the left side of the panoramic crop below, I decided to include a blurry silhouette of a bird that can also be found there. Can you guess its name?
and of course, a close up shot:
Were you able to guess the name of that bird? It was a Black-crowned Night Heron. As it turns out, this spot is also good for night herons.
I must admit, this Clapper Rail was an accidental find. I revisited this spot for the first time in 3 years this past summer. My target that day were migrating shorebirds. To my surprise, it happened to be a great spot for Clapper Rails! I thought it will be my first and last day there but I decided to give it a chance one more time. As it turned out, it was one of the most visited spots by me this past season and I will be back there next year for sure. This rediscovered hotspot will be included in my upcoming guide to photographing migrating shorebirds in the tri state area (NJ, NY, CT state).
