Ospreys of the New Jersey Location Guide
Find out where and how to plan your visit to this amazing place to photograph osprey action
In this guide, I share all the information needed to successfully photograph fishing Ospreys in this one of a kind place. This particular location offers the best opportunities for action photographs of an osprey hovering, diving, lifting off with a catch, fighting etc. I don’t want to exaggerate but when the conditions are right even spending 2 hours here will get you thousands of photographs. At the right conditions, you will see Osprey diving for fish every 10-15 minutes.
In this ebook I share my strategy on how I plan my visits, what conditions I’m looking for in the forecast to make the drive there. I share all my knowledge on this spot and all the photography tips to set you up for a successful visit.
As much as I love using my 600mm f/4 prime lens, the best lens to use at this location is a zoom lens between 200 and 600mm with or often without teleconverters. You read it correct! You can get a full frame shot of an osprey fishing at the front of you with a 200-600mm or even with a 100-400mm lens!
There are two things to consider at this location:
- action here is best only for the period of about 6 weeks - If you can come here only on the weekends, this gives you only 12 days of photographing these birds in the season. Great!? But wait! On average, the best conditions happen every other week. This gives you only 6 days. What are the chances that weather will cooperate during those 6 days? I hope that you see where I’m going with this. If you want to photograph these Ospreys, you must prepare yourself and be ready when the perfect conditions arise. Once they do, you need to be well prepared and you need to just go! When to go? You will find out in this guide!
- there is a lot of manmade distractions in the background as well as in the water. Luckily, there is a lot of action (at the specific time and at certain conditions) that will give you lots of opportunities for repeat shots and hopefully to get you a shot without these distractions.
If you time your visit well, main purpose of this guide, you will have lots of fun and thousand of photographs to choose from. I would like to say “guaranteed” but nature can be capricious at times :)
Did I mention that most of the action happens just few feet from the parking lot?
What are you waiting for? :)
