Spotted Sandpipers fighting - video - Jamaica Bay, NYC

Slow-motion video clip showing a territorial dispute between an adult and juvenile Spotted Sandpipers:

Spotted Sandpipers (Actitis macularius) fighting in midair - Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Gateway National Recreation Area, Queens, New York City, NY, East Coast, USA

On this particular day, I spent some quality time observing and photographing these shorebirds as they were feeding along this log for quite some time. As the birds were getting closer to each other, I’ve decided to switch to video mode hoping to record some interaction between them. To my surprise, within few second of me pressing the record button, they engaged in a short midair fight! 🤩

What I like about slow-motion video is that I have a chance to notice much more detail in the behavior of birds. Like this short clip. At normal speed, the action took only 2.5 seconds, where in the slowed down version, is almost 11 seconds long. Pretty cool, isn’t it?

I share a detailed information on how and where I'm finding photographing opportunities such as this one in my Location Guide / ebook to photographing migrating shorebirds at the Jamaica Bay: https://www.greggard.com/location-guides/jamaica-bay-shorebirds-photography-ebook
