Sanderling taking a bath - video - East Coast, USA
Slow-motion video of a Sanderling taking a bath in a shallow water along the New Jersey coast:
Even to take a bath these birds have to hurry not to be swept by incoming/retracting wave. Talk about the constant rush in your life🙈😉
This video was recorded with a DSLR few years ago. Even though it had a AF in video mode, I found it unreliable especially near the water. (Actually, same is still true even with the best mirrorless cameras these days). For that reason, I often manually focus the lens. In this short clip, you can see that I didn't adjust the focus properly and in few points the subject wasn’t sharp. Luckily, it wasn’t too bad and the most important part of the video is sharp. So why am I telling you this? One of the reasons I bought a mirrorless camera, was the “focus helper” aka focus peaking. Even though I still have to manually focus, having a focus peaking enabled even in the viewfinder, helps me a lot. More on that function, here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/what-focus-peaking
For that reason, if you are thinking of recording more videos and/or deciding what camera to get, make sure it has this function.
This video was recorded at the location described on page 25 of my Shorebirds of the Tri-state Area guide - https://www.greggard.com/location-guides/shorebirds-tri-state-nj-ny-ct-photography-ebook
Video captured with a Canon 1DXII camera paired with a Canon 600mm f/4 IS II lens and 1.4x teleconverter in 1080 resolution and upscaled to 4K with help of Topaz Enhance Ai software.
